How to renew a Thai driving license

Step-by-step guide to renewing a Thai driving license: complete the online DLT e-Learning, book via DLT Smart Queue, prepare your documents, and know what to do if your license has expired.

Complete your online training first

The DLT now offers e-Learning at dlt-elearning.com that you can finish at home before visiting the office:

  1. Register — Create an account and fill in your personal information.
  2. Select your license type — Choose the category you intend to renew.
  3. Watch the training videos — The system tracks your progress through all required modules.
  4. Complete the quizzes — Answer the short quiz at the end of each module.
  5. Save your completion result — Take a screenshot or print the certificate as proof of training.

Book your renewal appointment

Use the DLT Smart Queue app (iOS and Android) or visit gecc.dlt.go.th to reserve a time slot. Select "ต่ออายุใบอนุญาตขับรถ" (license renewal) and bring your documents plus the e-Learning result to the DLT office on your booked date.

Upgrading a 2-year temporary to a 5-year personal license

Required documents

  • National ID card (original)
  • Current or recently expired temporary license
  • Medical certificate issued within the last month

Fees

  • Car: 5฿ (application) + 505฿ (license) = 510฿
  • 3-wheeler: 5฿ + 255฿ = 260฿
  • Motorcycle: 5฿ + 255฿ = 260฿

Steps at the DLT office

  1. Submit your documents for verification
  2. Take the physical fitness test — depth perception, peripheral vision, color blindness, foot reaction time
  3. Pay the fee and receive your new 5-year license

Renewing a 5-year personal license

The documents, fees, and in-office steps are the same as above. Your current license must be expired less than 6 months, or expired less than 1 year with training.

What happens if your license has expired

Expired less than 1 year

Renew immediately. Complete training online (DLT e-Learning) or in person at the DLT office. No additional exam required.

Expired 1–3 years

You must complete training and re-take the written E-exam. A passing score of 45 out of 50 is required.

Expired more than 3 years

You must complete training, pass the written E-exam, and retake the practical driving test. This essentially restarts the licensing process.

Important reminders

  • Never drive with an expired license. Under Section 65 of the Vehicle Act B.E. 2522, driving with a lapsed license carries a fine of up to 2,000฿.
  • Renew early. You can renew up to 6 months before the expiry date with no penalty.
  • You can renew at any DLT office nationwide — you are not tied to your original issuing office.
  • An expired medical certificate or missing documents will cause your application to be rejected.
