Thai driving license for foreigners

Everything foreigners need to know about getting a Thai driving license: eligible visas, required documents, DLT e-Learning, Smart Queue booking, medical certificate, and the step-by-step process for new applications and license conversions.

Who can apply — visa requirements

To get a Thai driving license as a foreigner, you must hold a valid long-term visa. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) accepts the following visa types:

  • Non-Immigrant B (work/business visa)
  • Non-Immigrant O (family, marriage, retirement)
  • Non-Immigrant ED (education)
  • Non-Immigrant OA/OX (long-stay retirement)
  • Thailand Elite, LTR, SMART, and DTV visas
  • Valid work permit holders (even without a non-immigrant visa stamp)

Who cannot apply: Tourist visa holders, visa exemption/visa-on-arrival entrants, and transit visa holders are generally not eligible for a Thai driving license. If you are on a tourist visa, consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country instead.

Minimum age: 18 years for both car and motorcycle licenses.

Required documents checklist

Document preparation is the most time-consuming part. Gather these before you visit the DLT:

For all applicants

  • Passport — original with valid non-immigrant visa
  • Residence certificate — from Thai Immigration, issued within the last 30 days (cost: 500 THB). Requires your landlord to have filed a TM30.
  • Medical certificate — from any Thai clinic, issued within the last 30 days (cost: 100–300 THB)
  • Passport photos — 1-inch size, 2–3 copies
  • Photocopies — passport bio page, current visa page, most recent entry stamp, and TM30 receipt

Extra for license conversion

  • Original foreign driving license — must be valid
  • Certified Thai translation — of your foreign license (cost: 1,500–3,500 THB depending on language)

The most common reason foreigners fail at the DLT is the residence certificate. Confirm your landlord has filed your TM30 before applying.

Two pathways to choose from

New license application

For those without a valid foreign license. You must complete the full 4-hour DLT e-Learning module, pass the 50-question written test (need 45/50 correct), pass the practical driving test, and pass four aptitude tests (color blindness, depth perception, peripheral vision, reaction time). You will receive a 2-year temporary license.

Foreign license conversion

If you hold a valid license from your home country, you can convert it. This route skips the practical driving test entirely and issues a 5-year license directly. You still need the e-Learning module, the written test, and the aptitude tests. You must provide a certified Thai translation of your foreign license.

Step-by-step process for foreigners

  1. Ensure TM30 is filed. Your landlord must have filed a TM30 residence notification with Immigration. Without it, you cannot get a residence certificate.
  2. Get your residence certificate. Visit the nearest Immigration office with your passport, TM30 receipt, and 500 THB. The certificate is typically issued in 1–2 business days.
  3. Get your medical certificate. Visit any Thai clinic and ask for a driving license medical certificate. It costs 100–300 THB and takes about 15 minutes. Valid for 30 days.
  4. Prepare translations (conversion only). If converting a foreign license, get it translated into Thai by a certified translator.
  5. Complete DLT e-Learning. Go to dlt-elearning.com, register, and complete all video modules. The course is 4 hours for new applicants. Save your completion certificate — it is valid for 180 days.
  6. Book DLT Smart Queue appointment. Use gecc.dlt.go.th or the DLT Smart Queue app. Select your preferred DLT office, choose your service type (new license or conversion), and pick a date and time.
  7. Visit the DLT office. Arrive early on your appointment day. Bring all documents, photocopies, e-Learning certificate, and Smart Queue confirmation.
  8. Take the aptitude tests. Complete the four tests: color blindness, depth perception, peripheral vision, and brake reaction time. These take about 10–15 minutes.
  9. Take the written E-exam. 50 multiple-choice questions. You need 45 out of 50 (90%) to pass. Available in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai.
  10. Take the practical driving test (new license only). Conducted on the DLT closed course: forward driving, parallel parking, reversing, and three-point turns.
  11. Receive your license. Pay the fee, have your photo taken, and receive your smart card on the spot.

Fees breakdown (2026)

New license (2-year temporary)

  • Car: 5 THB (application) + 200 THB (license) = 205 THB
  • Motorcycle: 5 THB (application) + 100 THB (license) = 105 THB

Conversion / Renewal (5-year)

  • Car: 5 THB + 505 THB = 510 THB
  • Motorcycle: 5 THB + 255 THB = 260 THB
  • Both together: 765 THB

Additional costs: Residence certificate (500 THB), medical certificate (100–300 THB), license translation (1,500–3,500 THB for conversions). E-Learning and Smart Queue booking are free.

The DLT e-Learning module

From 2026, all foreign applicants must complete the DLT e-Learning module before their appointment. Here is what to expect:

  • New applicants: Full 4-hour course covering traffic signs, right-of-way rules, speed limits, and Thai traffic law.
  • Renewal applicants: 2 hours for car license, 1 hour for motorcycle license.
  • Format: Video modules of approximately 15 minutes each, with per-chapter knowledge checks.
  • Cannot skip or fast-forward. The system tracks engagement.
  • Certificate valid for 180 days. Complete the course within 6 months of your DLT visit.

DLT Smart Queue booking guide

The Smart Queue system (gecc.dlt.go.th) is mandatory for foreign applicants in 2026. Walk-ins are no longer accepted.

  1. Register with your passport number, email address, and Thai mobile number.
  2. Select your preferred DLT office. Popular branches (Chatuchak, Bang Chan, Pattaya, Phuket) fill quickly — book 2–3 weeks ahead.
  3. Choose your service type: New license, foreign license conversion, renewal, or replacement.
  4. Pick a date and time slot. Morning slots tend to move faster.
  5. Bring the confirmation to your appointment.

Common reasons foreigners get rejected

  • Expired or missing residence certificate — must be issued within 30 days and match your TM30.
  • Medical certificate older than 30 days — strictly enforced at most branches.
  • DLT e-Learning not completed — new applicants must show the completion certificate.
  • Ineligible visa type — tourist visas and visa-exempt entries are generally rejected.
  • Foreign license translation errors — translation must be from a DLT-accepted translator and cover both sides.
  • No Smart Queue appointment — walk-ins are not accepted for foreigners.

Renewing your Thai driving license

For detailed renewal instructions, see our license renewal guide. Quick summary:

  • Renew up to 90 days before expiry. No penalty for renewing early.
  • Expired under 1 year: Aptitude tests only. Same as standard renewal.
  • Expired 1–3 years: Must retake the written test (45/50), plus aptitude tests.
  • Expired over 3 years: Treated as a brand-new applicant — full process again.
  • Driving with an expired license: Fine up to 2,000 THB. Insurance may be void.

Prepare for the written test

Use our flashcard trainer and question bank to prepare for the 50-question DLT theory exam. The test covers traffic signs, right-of-way rules, speed limits, road markings, driving safety, and Thai traffic law penalties. You need 45 out of 50 correct to pass.
